Please Call Us About Your Overdue Taxes or Returns
If you have received this notice, it means you owe tax and have ignored previous notices CP-504 or CP-523 or you have delinquent tax returns. You may receive this notice even if you have made arrangements to make installment payments or you have been placed in a "hardship" status. If this is the case, call the number on the notice immediately and advise them. Be sure to write down the name and badge number of the person you speak to as well as the date and time of the call.
The top right of the notice will indicate the date of the notice, the primary social security number or employer ID and the number to call. The notice will indicate that you have ten days to respond. The second page of the notice will describe the type tax and tax period (s) involved. If you have filed but unpaid taxes, it will also show any interest and penalties accrued since your last notice.
If you feel like the amount is really due and you can afford to pay the balance shown, you should remit the amount shown as soon as possible, using the envelope included with the notice.
If you agree with the amount but are unable to pay it all right now there are several options. If you owe no other tax, the amount due is less than $25,000, and you can pay the balance off in 60 months or less -- call the number listed on the notice and make arrangements with them. You can specify the day of the month you want to make payments. You are advised to pay it off as soon as possible, however, you may ask them what the minimum payment is to pay off the balance in 60 months. If the amount is more than you can handle or the technician refuses to give you that option - select one of the options below.
One caution -- if the taxes are 941 (payroll) taxes from your employee's withholding, you have a very different problem and need to seek professional help as soon as possible, unless you are in a position to pay the liability within 30 days. Please contact us immediately if this is the case.
If the reason you received the notice is because you have delinquent tax returns, you will have to prepare them or make arrangements to get them prepared. See below for information on how far back to go and how to get old tax information. If you ignore this notice, the IRS could file returns for you or summons you to appear before them with all your books and records. Professional help is recommended.
